BATTERY STORAGE

Solar battery storage: use your own power in the evening

A home battery stores electricity from your solar panels, or cheap overnight electricity, so you can use it when you need it. Batteries have 0% VAT until 31 March 2027 and can be spread with a low-rate Warm Homes loan. We introduce you to one trusted, MCS-certified installer for a free survey.

VAT0%

On home batteries, with or without solar panels, until 31 March 2027.

WARM HOMES LOAN£15,000

Up to £15,000 towards a battery, on top of up to £15,000 for solar.

SMART TARIFFS

Charge from the grid when it's cheapest and use it at peak times.

How a home battery helps

  • With solar: keep the electricity your panels make in the day and use it in the evening, instead of exporting it cheaply.
  • Without solar: charge overnight on a cheap tariff and run the house on it at peak times.
  • With a heat pump: a battery and smart tariff can bring down the cost of running an air source heat pump.

What size battery do I need?

It depends on how much electricity you use in the evening and the size of any solar system. The installer looks at your bills and your roof and recommends a size, so you're not paying for capacity you won't use.

Battery storage questions

Is there a grant for battery storage?

Not for most homes, but batteries have 0% VAT until 31 March 2027 and can be spread with a government-backed Warm Homes loan of up to £15,000. Lower-income households may get help through their council's Warm Homes: Local Grant.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

Usually, yes. Most solar systems can have a battery added later; the installer checks your inverter and the space.

Can I have a battery without solar panels?

Yes. Charge it overnight on a cheap tariff and use it at peak times. It also gives you some backup with the right system.

Where does the battery go?

Often in a garage, utility room, loft or on an outside wall, depending on the model. The installer finds a safe spot during the survey.
